I started sewing clothes as a teenager, a statement against Romanian expectations of uniformity, in the 1980's. I made my outfits in color combinations that pleased and attracted the eye, in current, fashionable styles. When I arrived in New England in 1991 and discovered beautifully decorated homes, people expressing visions of comfort and style in the way their rooms were decorated, I was fascinated. I taught myself the concepts behind slipcovers and draperies and stopped making clothes (with a few seldom exceptions).
My daughter's arrival in 2003 awakened the original reason I leaned to sew: making clothes that address issues and display my preferences. The concepts behind the limited-production outfits and heirlooms for expecting mothers and children are solutions to questions that crossed my mind while raising her: maternity sweaters, tandem outfits for mother and daughter, sets of hat-n-scarf and up-to-the-elbow gloves, capelets, and custom toys, all in colors combinations that are sensitive to the role of each product.
I am attracted to color. Then pattern. Color and pattern combined perfectly inspired my first line of limited-production outfits and accessories: Jumpers. Never before had I seen a fabric more versatile. Its colors fascinated me: the taupe background complements every color; the muted rose, purple, light blue, aquamarine, navy, and brown in the sprouting embroidery complement almost every existing piece of clothing. I created clothes that finish and tie existing mismatched clothing, because I believe in minimal wardrobes and sophisticated choices for both mothers and daughters!
